Orthodontic treatment is a partnership between you and the orthodontist. We both have responsibilities
in ensuring your treatment progresses on schedule and finishes with the excellent result that we want.
During your treatment you may need to wear elastic bands that attach to the upper and lower braces to correct your bite
or you may need an orthodontic appliance that needs to be worn a certain number of hours daily. Good co-operation is
essential to keep your treatment progressing on schedule. Poor compliance wearing the elastics or the orthodontic
appliance is the main reason for an extended treatment time. A two year treatment can become a three year treatment
if co-operation is poor.
Another area of responsibility is taking care of your braces which means excellent tooth brushing and some
modifications in diet. It is more difficult to maintain excellent oral hygiene with braces and an extra
effort is required. Poor oral hygiene can result in decalcification marks around the brackets and swollen
gums. Some restrictions in your diet are needed to prevent damage to the braces or loosening of your brackets.
These restrictions include avoiding sticky foods (toffee, gum etc.) and hard foods (hard candy, ice cubes, etc.).
